The possibility of tolerance. A suspended European question

Abstract

This work aims at analyzing two dimensions of toleration. I’ll explore toleration as a moral virtue, its possible conceptual structure, reasons and implications. It follows an analysis of toleration as a political value in order to justify the coexistence with whom we might disapprove in a liberal-democratic society. The european philosophical and constitutional tradition has made toleration its own as something which has a value, and is a value. Although, this acceptance seems to have not avoided conflictual situations. This might be because a perception of diversity makes liberty rights not fully justifiable. If toleration is not a mere liberal slogan, it might be what protects us from the interference based on disapproval. The rawlsian argument will help me to explore the implications of a diverse society.
