Abstract

Without claiming to be exhaustive, the present essay proposes to analyse the anticolonialist positions of Giulio Andrea Belloni, with particular attention to the Somali question. In the international context of the second post-war period, Italy found itself in the need to rebuild the relations that had been compromised by the fascism and the conflict. The Italian credibility passed not only from the recognition of a stable position within the polarised context, but also from the pragmatic approach of its political class; accepting the mandate in Somalia was an important occasion. Belloni, among the criticisms of his own party – the Italian Republican Party (PRI) –, opposed this decision raising two issues: the anti-colonial tradition of the Republicans, and the need for an “internal colonisation”.
